Don't Believe These "Trends" Concerning Door Lock Change
How to Do a Door Lock Change
Change of the door lock is an easy and inexpensive method to increase your home's security. However, the process is not for all. It requires a certain amount of skill and perseverance.
The cylinder is inside the knob's body. The cylinder is responsible for recognizing the key as it is inserted into the lock.
The old lock can be removed
First, you must remove the lock that was previously in place. This is a relatively easy process, however there are a few points to keep in mind. First, ensure that your new lock is the correct size for the door you have. This will ensure that it fits properly and does not create a gap around the latch or deadbolt plug.
After removing the latch plate, you'll need to look for two bolts or screws on the inside of casing that are holding the casing in place with the two halves of the lock. Remove them with the help of a screwdriver, and then remove the lock from the door. If you are using a mortise locking system, there is a set screw that binds the handle to the spindle. Take off the doorknobs by removing this screw using a screwdriver.
Take the deadbolt and latch plug from your door jamb. Then, you are able to install your new lock. If you are replacing a mortise lock you should also measure the distance between the lock case and the edge of your door to ensure that the new lock will be able to fit.
Many reasons could cause you to replace your door lock, including being concerned that someone else may have the key or if you're welcoming an incoming roommate. In any event, you can save money by taking the lock off yourself rather than paying an expert to remove it. It's easier than many people think, and it can be completed in just a few minutes.
Remove the handle and trim of your door. With a flat screwdriver, take off the trim. You should be able twist off the majority of it. In certain cases, you may even be able to remove the handles completely. The next step is to look for a hole on the inside of the handle and then insert an unstraightened clip into it. This will trigger the release mechanism, which allows you to take off the handle. The next step is to look at the inside of the lock for another small tab that you can press with a flat screwdriver. Once the spindle has been removed, you can remove the cylinder and the housing.
Making a decision on a new locking system
When it comes to selecting the right lock for your home there are a lot of options. Consider different kinds of locks, and select one that fits your door's style. Think about the backset (the distance between the edge of the door and the center of the hole in the lock) and the cross bore (small hole in the frame of the door frame). Choose a lock that fits the door's thickness and the swing.
The American National Standards Institute and BHMA have graded most door locks to give you an idea of their strength and the difficulty to pick them or disable them. A grade 3 lock could be a good choice for a tranquil urban apartment complex, whereas the grade 1 lock may stand up to the traffic that is frequented by a retail storefront on a busy street.
Most smart door locks require a digital key code to open. If you're worried about hacking, or other security concerns, consult an expert locksmith.
Replace the cylinder
If the cylinder of your door lock is damaged or broken, you can replace it in just a few minutes using a simple DIY project. The key is to select the right cylinder and follow the steps that accompany it. First, take off the handle or knob if it is present. Then using a screwdriver remove the trim that is around the lock cylinder. Once the trim is removed, you will be able to access the screws that secure the cylinder and remove them using a flathead screwdriver. The cylinder is then gently removed from the door.
Be sure to measure the length of the new cylinder prior to putting it in place. With a tape measure, determine the distance between the cylinder's center and its right and left sides. Buy a new cylinder that has the same measurements. This will prevent cylinders from snapping when doors are hit or the key is stuck inside.
Place RepairMyWindowsAndDoors inside the door, and then turn the key. This will ensure that the cylinder is in alignment with the carrier, which is usually located on the outside of the lock. You can then loosen the set screws which should be just a couple of turns inside the head. If there is a screw at the edge of the case, which holds the door, you'll need to remove it.
You can replace the old lock cylinder with the new one by inserting it into the case, and then tightening the set screws. It is also recommended to reinstall the piece that connects the cylinder to the lock indicator stem that you can do by pulling up three small tabs on the back of the cylinder using needle-nose pliers. Then, you can connect the second bracket to the back of the cylinder. You must then install the strike plate and latch plate, as well as the retaining rings fixed to the top of the lock the cylinder.
Installing a new lock
If you're replacing an old lock, you must begin by measuring the width of your door. The majority of residential locksets are designed to fit a door thickness of 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 inches. If your door is more than 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 inches, you'll need an extra thick door kit. This will require longer screws, or an extended spindle extension or the tail piece for door knobs.
The majority of locks come with a comprehensive instruction booklet that will assist you in installing the new hardware. Be sure to read the instructions thoroughly before beginning the process to ensure that you are following all of the necessary steps. The manual will also provide you with an idea of the level of skill required to complete the task. If you're changing a lock for the first time, you may want to ask an experienced person for help.
It's a great idea tape the openings in the old hardware prior to installing the new lock. This will keep the screws from falling out of the holes, and will protect any tile you might have put in the area. It will also prevent any potential damage from rust, dirt, and grime. SECURAM Touch includes a strip of masking or gaffer tape, but you can make use of any tape you have.
After you have removed the screws holding the interior half of the lock section to the outside side, pull it straight away. It is important to do this quickly to prevent the lock from closing accidentally and damaging the mechanism.
Install the new latch bolt in the upper cross bore of your new lock if it has one. Make sure you put it in the proper position, which will be indicated by an arrow. Then, slide the latch plate on top of the bolt and screw it in place.
Screw the deadbolt into the jamb of the door. Test the deadbolt by throwing it a few times to ensure that it is extended all the way through the strike plate and is secured. Follow the instructions included in your electronic smart lock to program it. This requires downloading an application, registering your e-mail address, confirming your identity, and connecting to the wireless network in order to add your device.
